Jason Kirk :: Editor

Bona Fides

I have served as a professional editor in various capacities for more than 20 years, including books, magazines, and online. During this time, I've worked on more than 200 fiction and nonfiction books, which have:

  • hit the Wall Street Journal best seller list nine times
  • won more than two dozen awards, including the Arthur C. Clarke and British Science Fiction Awards, plus three awards for Best Edited Book
  • been nominated for more than 75 awards, including the Philip. K. Dick and Bram Stoker Awards
  • moved more than 10 million units

Far more importantly, the authors I work with almost unerringly finish the editing process convinced of its value and delighted by the results. Scroll down for a partial list of clients and testimonials.

Additional Experience

For three years I also managed a team responsible for online, email, and social-media marketing of an extensive catalog of books across five formats and three countries, and with this experience, I bring an additional understanding of how best to develop a manuscript to succeed both on its own terms and in the context of the eventual book's potential audience.

As well, I have an MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Michigan, which is to say that I came to the work of editing as a writer first, and I believe in the priority of the writer’s perspective and goals in framing everything that goes into the work of editing.

Genres

My experience spans science fiction, fantasy, young-adult fiction, thrillers, mysteries, literary fiction, short stories and essays, memoirs and other nonfiction, and poetry, and I’m open to discussing any project, long or short.

SERVICES

I offer the following services and work both with authors directly and with publishers.

  • Developmental Edit: This is a two- to three-round editing process. In the first round, I discuss the goals with all stakeholders, read the full manuscript,  and address "big picture" issues — including but not limited to: structure, voice, plot and pacing, dialogue, exposition, and other top-line aspects of the work — with a comprehensive editorial letter, illustrative annotations in the manuscript, and follow-up discussions as needed. After an author's revisions to address all of the above, the second round incorporates a meticulous line-edit, focusing closely on the language itself, line by line, from start to finish. Sometimes a short third round ensues to clean up any remaining issues.

  • Reading and Consultation: This is the first round only of the process detailed above.

  • Line Edit: This is the second round only of the process detailed above.

I charge by the word for the longest version of the manuscript and require 50% of the agreed-upon fee up front, with the other half to be paid upon completion of the work, plus a finished copy of the printed book upon publication (if applicable).

PLEASE NOTE: For direct clients (authors), I also offer Wage-Gap Pricing.

I’d love to talk further in the context of a specific project. What are you writing?
