Wage-Gap Pricing

In the United States, women earn approximately 80% as much as men for the same labor. But imagine if — until we close the wage gap by law — women received a 20% discount on everything. Clothes, food, tuition. Rent, houses, mortgage rates, tax rates. 

Everything.

As with any system, some people will work around the rules. Wives will start to buy everything their families need. Men will start to pay women a cut of the discount to do their shopping. As the private sector loses revenue to these behavioral shifts, businesses will pressure various levels of government to legislate fair pay. The discount shrinks as the wage gap shrinks.

Can you imagine?

I did, and I like it. For both editing services and sales of my haiku pyrography, I offer wage-gap pricing to direct clients. My discounts are rounded estimates based on data published by the U.S. Department of Labor.
